Jyotish – The Spiritual Aspects of Painting

Looking at your work, it is difficult to know “what or who” is streaming through you as you paint.

All of painting, but all of vision, is based on reflected light. Paintings are basically a big lie. You are trying to convince somebody that something about a half a millimeter thick on a flat surface is not that at all: that it has got depth, it has movement.

Almost everything you look at is reflected light. But though a few things that we see and almost always when we see them, they are very striking to us. That is because the light is behind it and you see the light of the sun coming through something.

If you look at a flower, that is back lit, or trees with leaves that are back lit, they seem to glow. They seem to glow in a much more vibrant way than if you look at them in noon day sun where it is seemly light reflected off that same leaf or that same petal.

So that back lit light coming from inside, for me it represents spiritually, light coming from within, and projecting out. Waves, that thin part as the wave comes up gives you an opportunity to see that translucent light coming through.

Clouds do the same thing. They allow you to see that light that comes through in a translucent way rather than just in a reflected way.

Those are, for me as an artist, painting is trying to capture light, in some way or another, which represents the symbolism of Nature. For me, the translucent elements are very, very attractive. I enjoy working with them.
